There is a new managed security trend happening right now, and it’s gaining steam. According to a study by Forrester, 50 percent of respondents said they turned to Managed Security Service Providers (MSSPs) for outside help. Another 28 percent said they’re planning to do the same over the course of the next 12 months.
This trend is a response to companies that want to improve security for customer-facing services and applications, as well as safeguard themselves from internal and external threats. Given the complex nature of cybersecurity, choosing a third-party expert is something that many enterprises embrace today.
So, what are MSSPs providing? Here are just a few of the services:
- IT systems monitoring
- Threat detection and intelligence
- Technology assessment and analysis
Interestingly, companies that had not yet adopted services from an MSSP were interested in their ability to satisfy capacity issues. However, organizations already working with MSSPs said they are most interested in their ability to provide analysis and optimization. Almost 70 percent of all respondents said one of the big advantages of working with an MSSP is that they are able to enhance relationships while improving the customer experience.
If you’re looking for endpoint security, what core components should your managed security provider offer? Here are a few key functions to look for:
- Support for all endpoints, including tablets, servers, phones, desktops, and laptops
- A centrally managed solution
- A Software as a Service offering
- The solution should be comprehensive, not just basic anti-virus
And what about mobile/roaming security? What should you consider?
- The hosted solution should give you 24/7/365 coverage, which is maintained completely by the vendor
- You should be offered application visibility and control solutions for monitoring and auditing usage habits
- URL filtering for more productivity
Email can be a gateway for malicious attacks, which means email security should also be on your list of priorities as you consider managed security services. You need industry-leading spam detection, because an estimated 90 percent of emails today are actually spam. Also, nearly 80 percent of ransomware is being transferred via email, so make sure your MSSP is able to deliver.
